History of Quartz Glass

Quartzglass is a relatively young material. In 1821 Mr. E.D. Clarke was the first one to melt small pieces of white quartz in a H2O2 flame and got a transparent substance out, we now call quartz glass. 40 years later, in France, mr. Gaudin repeated this and got the same result. In 1893, a frenchman called Moisson, succeeded in melting a few hundred grams of silicon dioxide in a high temperature furnace.

No earlier than in the beginning of this century Mr. Herschkowitz at the C. Zeiss Company in Germany made the first discs, 40 mm in diameter and 10 mm thick, homogeneous of structure and without large airbubbles.

Nowadays Transparent Fused silica is among the most valuable materials which are at the disposal of industry and science. The raw materials, quartz crystal and pegmatitic sand, are found in nature an consist of the purest silicon dioxide.

By means of special chemical processes, extremely pure silicon chlorides are also obtained from these materials, and are used in the manufacture of synthetic fused silica. Quartz glass possesses a unique range of properties- no other material has such a combination of perfectly blended characteristics.

The advantages are :

  • low thermal expansion
  • temperature shock resistance
  • high transformation and softening temperatures
  • good optical transmission from the UV- through the IR- light spectrum

The optical characteristics of transparent quartz glass are very dependent on its chemical purity; slight impurities amounting only 0.001% can cause a marked deterioration. Consequently different qualities of quartz glass differing only slightly in their purities show considerable differences in optical transmission.

That is why Squall International BV has the word alliance as a part of the acronym.

Squall International BV's motto is :
Eyes on the future, feet on the ground.

At Squall International bv
we are always at the cutting edge of new technology.

The only way to insure high quality
in quartzglass products is by using computer controlled manufacturing. This is only possible with the new developed plasma-techniques.

Squall International provides the technical know-how to meet the still growing standards.
